Fosamax Lawsuit
My mom was taking bisphosphonates for 11 years with improved density tests and positively no side effects, that is until she formed a small sore on the inside of her mouth that did not heal. The sore manifested into a sharp object that protruded the site, so she had to go to the dentist. The dentist extracted a quarter inch chunk of bone and told me that in 25 yrs. of dentistry he had never seen anything like it. My mom had her own teeth and had no teeth removed. She quickly stopped taking fosamax in 2006.

Serious bisphosphonate side effects might include osteonecrosis of the jaw although some serious Fosamax side effects can sometimes show themselves in a severe nature, the most serious Fosamax side effect is the development of a bone disease known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), or dead jaw.

Osteonecrosis is a type of bone disease that is usually associated with large joivnts like the hips, knees, ankles or shoulders. The manifestation of ONJ is associated with the temporary or sometimes permanent loss of blood to bone tissue, leading to death of the tissue and the inevitable collapse of the bone. There are approximately 10,000 to 20,000 new cases of osteonecrosis diagnosed each year in the United States, most of which happen as a result of some type of bone injury like a fracture or dislocation.

I saw my dentist yesterday for the incisor that is eroding and he said he is hesitant to treat me because of the potential for osteonecrosis of the jaw from Fosamax. I was surprised. I only taken two doses. I made a decision to read the entire lengthy information sheet that came with my prescription - sounds like something I should have done first. But the print is so small that even with perfectly normal eye sight after cataract surgery this past winter, I still required a magnifying glass to get thru it, with great and difficult concentration.
